Erich Katz collection, 1918-2007 [manuscript].

The Erich Katz Collection includes correspondence, programs, publications, manuscripts, legal documents (such as contracts with his publishers), photos, art, clippings, recordings, and Katz's personal files of the American Recorder Society. Most of the collection contains the personal files of Katz, however it also includes some items collected by others, such as condolence correspondence to Winifred Jaeger, articles about Katz, and programs of musical events held in his honor.

The American Recorder Society was founded in 1939 in New York City by Suzanne Bloch, Margaret Bradford, and Irmgard Lehrer. Its aim was to provide a meeting place for recorder players in order to stimulate and improve the appreciation and playing of recorder music. Composer, musicologist, teacher, and performer, Erich Katz (1900-1973) was one of the founders of the early-music movement in America and the Musical Director of the American Recorder Society from 1951 to 1959. Born in Germany, he received his Ph.D. in Musicology from the Musicological Seminary in Freiburg, Germany. He immigrated to England two weeks before the war began.
